Election process is said as the piece of
‘democracy’ cake. We are Indonesian, a country with democracy policies. Almost
all of us may already be joined in one of election process to choose our
representative to speak our condition. But, is our election process fair? Let
we discuss it together.
The first idea that might grow on
our mind is saying absolutely yes. Of course, the process to elect our leader
is arranged by the law. The rule said that our ways to choose them is based on
the standard of LUBER JURDIL. L stands for Langsung
(Directly choose), U stands for Umum
(Universalities), BE stands for Bebas
(Freedom), R stands for Rahasia
(Secret), JUR stands for Jujur
(Honesty), and DIL stands for Adil
(Fairness). Those rules are written in the Books of Law of Republic of
Indonesia. Next, the central government in Jakarta also was already build up a
commission that has responsibilities to regulate and control the way of
election process, namely Komisi Pemilihan Umum (KPU) or Organization of General
Election in English. This organization is running by some capable persons which
come from the suitable background, for example one of them is majoring at
Political Science graduates.
Furthermore, not only the Organization
of General Election itself that works for the Election process, but also some
other government and non-governmental organization. The police corps and some
soldier from different level of battalion also work together to keep the
condition safe and conducive, so that the fairness could be keep. From the
non-governmental sector, there are several pressure groups such as LSM KONTRAS,
the non-profit organization that concern to keep the election process fair.
In the other side, some people may speak
that the election process especially in our beloved country, Indonesia is can’t
be determined as the fair election process. Why? There are several reasons to
emphasize that statement. The first, in our country, there are so many parties.
As we know from the public news, the party that will participate at the next
general election is about 40 parties. It’s okay that at first we accept the
amount of the party, but how can they get much voice from the citizens to face
the standard determined by the law? From that case, it will leads to the
activities that we called ‘money’ politics. The party which gives money, that
party that will be chosen by the citizens. Not only from the political side
itself, we also know that the level of people who participate to elect is just
about 65% (as the data comparison from Kompas 21 September 2012). If a party
wins that election, could we say that the party is the representative of us?
Is that fair for the people who are not choosing that party?
To sum up all of the problems above, we
can’t say that the election process is absolutely fair. But, it depends on our
perception to choose the right people that sit on the governmental place and
our responsibilities. Let’s use our voice wisely!

Party is made because of the mankind diversities. Whether it is fair or not, could you imgine when there are no parties at all? will it be worse or better?
